MTN, a telecom company, has told its customers that starting January 18, 2024, people using the Globacom network won’t be able to call MTN lines. This is because Globacom owes a large amount of money in interconnect fees, which are charges for connecting calls between different networks. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed this action, stating that Glo subscribers can’t call MTN lines until the debt is settled. MTN clarified that making calls to Glo subscribers is still allowed.
Interconnect charges have been accumulating for over 15 years and now amount to billions of naira. The NCC, the regulatory body, approved the partial disconnection of Globacom from MTN due to non-payment of these charges. Globacom owes the NCC an Annual Operating Levy (AOL), which every operator is required to pay annually. The NCC examined the situation and concluded that Globacom didn’t have sufficient or justifiable reasons for not paying the interconnect charges.
