The police said it’s against the law for Nigerians to cover their car number plates.

The spokesperson for the Force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, shared this information on his social media account, X (formerly known as Twitter), on Saturday, December 16, 2023.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adejobi, stated that certain vehicle owners frequently hide their number plates, emphasizing that this behavior is incorrect and will no longer be accepted.

He said it’s common to see vehicle owners and drivers covering their number plates without any reason. This is not right, and it’s considered a crime.

The Force spokesperson emphasized, “You must not cover your number plate for any reason. It’s as important and mandatory for all vehicles to be properly registered. Therefore, it’s necessary to keep registered numbers visible at all times.”

He called on police and traffic management personnel to actively pursue vehicle owners and drivers who disobey this directive, stating,”This behavior must stop in Nigeria, and we must follow the right procedures. Our officers, men, and other traffic management agencies are aware of this and are encouraged to apprehend any violator, as it is considered a criminal act.”

He added, “Covering number plates promotes recklessness and crimes without consequences. Let’s unite to oppose it.”

      THOSE EXCLUDED

However, Mr. Adejobi mentioned that “pennant officers” and leaders of the three branches of government – executive, legislature, and judiciary – are excluded from this rule as they use pennants or flags on their official vehicles.

“Their numbers and pennants are accompanied by the seal of their offices or ranks (for military or police),” he clarified.

However, he emphasized that “by 6 p.m., the pennant must be lowered,” and the number plates of official vehicles should be visible.

He also mentioned that when officials are not inside the vehicle, the flags on their cars must be covered with their registered number or seal of office.
