Situated in Niger State, just north of Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja,

Zuma Rock stands as a symbol of strength, resilience, and beauty.

But what makes Zuma Rock so special? Let’s delve into its history and significance.

The Zuba people from Niger State found a rock in the 15th century that they named “Zumwa,” meaning “a place of guinea fowls.

These people were part of a larger group called Kwararafa, also known as Koro, which spread across northern Nigeria.

Before reaching Zuma Rock, their spiritual leaders told them to keep moving until they found a special rock.

When they found Zuma Rock in a dense forest, they settled nearby and established several communities around it.

Zuma Rock is not just an impressive rock but also holds special meaning in local stories and beliefs.

The Gwari people, who live nearby, see Zuma Rock as spiritually important.

They believe it’s a protective spirit that watches over them.

Some locals think the rock has healing abilities

Many people say they’ve felt better after visiting or praying there.

These beliefs add a special cultural and spiritual value to Zuma Rock, making it more than just a natural wonder.

In a thick forest near the rock, the Koro people lived in a village.

Their chief acted as the rock’s spiritual leader, believed to be a deity.

There’s a smaller rock in the village where they thought offerings were made.

The villagers guarded the rock, keeping outsiders away because of old beliefs and fears of curses.

Every year, the Emir of Abuja sent animals like a black ox to the villagers as gifts for their deity.

In the 1940s, some officials, including Sulaimanu Barau who later became the Emir of Abuja, wanted to visit the rock and village to learn more.

Locals warned them about curses and the village’s strange practices.

But they went anyway, first stopping at Chachi village.

While the villagers there wouldn’t guide them to the forest village, they pointed the way.

When they reached the forest village, they found friendly people who spoke their language.

Contrary to rumors, the village chief looked normal, dressed like them.

He said they used to make animal offerings but not human ones, mostly to honor ancestors and past leaders, not just the rock.

Even today, Zuma Rock is surrounded by mysterious tales.

Some locals believe evil spirits live inside it, while others think it’s a hideout for criminals and secret societies.

People living nearby have different stories: some think the bad spirits have left, allowing farming nearby, while others believe these spirits are still active, showing strange powers, especially at night.
