Using an automatic transmission in a car is easier than a manual one, but there are still things to avoid to keep it working well:
- Avoid Shifting While Moving: Only shift between drive, reverse, and park when you’re completely stopped. Shifting while in motion can harm your transmission.
- Use Park When Stopped: Always shift to park when your car is not moving, especially for long periods. Leaving it in drive while parked can overheat the engine.
- Don’t Floor the Gas: Avoid pressing the gas pedal hard from a complete stop. It strains the transmission, and the car needs a moment to get going smoothly.
- Take the Check Engine Light Seriously: If the Check Engine light comes on, don’t ignore it. It could signal issues with the transmission, like low fluid levels or overheating. Visit a mechanic promptly.
- Don’t Shift to Neutral While Stopped: Unlike manual transmissions, you don’t need to shift to neutral when stopped with an automatic. Doing so can cause unnecessary wear and tear on the gearbox and might be unsafe.
